The Education Landscape in Indonesia report explores the evolution of Indonesia’s education sector from 2017 to 2023, reflecting on policy transformations, achievements, and persistent challenges. The report provides a comprehensive view of Indonesia’s education environment by analyzing visible trends, stakeholder interactions, and the sector’s responsiveness to local and global shifts. The study synthesizes findings from a thorough literature review, stakeholder interviews, and FGDs, aiming to chart a future trajectory as Indonesia approaches its 2045 Golden Indonesia vision. Recommendations are crafted for policymakers and philanthropists, inviting feedback to enhance the sector’s inclusivity and effectiveness.

This report builds on the Asia Philanthropy Circle’s 2017 “Catalysing Productive Livelihood” as a foundational study, updating insights relevant to the philanthropic community. Highlighting the underutilized roles of grantmaker, implementer, and advocator within Indonesian educational philanthropy, the report argues for leveraging these roles to maximize impact. Philanthropists can support government initiatives more effectively by enhancing sector-wide integrity, professionalism, and resource management. By nurturing mature philanthropic programs, the sector stands poised to support educational quality improvements and foster productive collaboration across public and private spheres.
