About the event

Disruptions to global supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated existing trends for companies to seek diversification in their value chains beyond China. As a result, many Southeast Asian countries have become attractive destinations for businesses seeking to either relocate or expand in the region.

The interest from such companies can bring in much needed FDI and economic recovery to countries in the region suffering from the economic downturns from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The panel will explore how countries in the region are competing to attract this investment, how the future of global value chain linkages might develop in the future, and the potential political risks that might see businesses who achieve success in country markets be appropriated by the state.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Jayant Menon, Visiting Fellow, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore
  • Lau Zheng Zhou, Research Manager, Institute for Democracy & Economic Affairs (IDEAS), Malaysia
